Areola reduction / inverted nipples
Having a very large areola or inverted nipples can be very difficult for some people. This problem can usually be put right with a minor surgical procedure.
You can make an appointment for a consultation with the plastic surgeon. This first consultation is free of charge.
The specialist will be able to tell you if such a procedure can be performed on you. And whether the result you want is achievable. During this consultation, the surgeon may show you pre-op and post-op photos.
Procedure
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. With areola reduction, the skin of the areola is loosened and part of its circumference is cut away. The skin is then stitched and covered with sticking plaster. With inverted nipples, a small procedure can be performed to release the nipple from its tethering so that it faces outwards. Once the wound has been stitched, it is covered with sticking plaster.
Post procedure
You will be free to go home shortly after the procedure. The bandage is to be kept on for one week. Care must be taken when sleeping, washing and exercising for the next few weeks. The ears may well remain red, swollen and oversensitive for a number of weeks. These symptoms will gradually disappear. After six or so weeks, the results will generally be plain to see.
You will be free to go home shortly after the procedure. You will go back to see the plastic surgeon a week after the procedure for a check-up and to have the sticking plaster and stitches removed. Follow-up check-ups will be made in consultation with the specialist.
