Breast reduction
Having breasts that are too large can be a pain both figuratively and literally – leading to back, shoulder and neck complaints. Having a breast reduction is a possible solution.
You can make an appointment for a consultation with the plastic surgeon. This first consultation is free of charge.
The specialist will be able to tell you if such a procedure can be performed on you. And whether the result you want is achievable. During this consultation, the surgeon may show you pre-op and post-op photos.
Breast reduction procedure
The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and takes approximately two hours. A wedge-shaped section of skin and glandular tissue is removed from the underside of the breast. The nipple is then raised and if necessary the size of the areola can be reduced. This is how a smaller model breast is formed. After stitching the wound together, the plastic surgeon then applies a support bandage.
Post procedure
You will be required to stay overnight at the clinic after surgery. You will then be able to go home the next day. The bandage is to be kept on for one week. Afterwards you are recommended to wear a sturdy bra (measured to your new size). You may have slightly reduced sensitivity in the breast and nipple, but this generally comes back after a while. In most cases it will still be possible to breastfeed. For a period of six weeks, you are to refrain from doing any strenuous exercise, lifting heavy weights or performing any heavy work. The scars will slowly start to fade, but will never completely disappear.
You will go back to see the plastic surgeon a week after the procedure for a check-up and to have the bandage and stitches removed. Follow-up check-ups will be made in consultation with the specialist.
