Gastric balloon to combat obesity

Obesity is a problem that rules the day-to-day lives of many people. It’s no easy matter losing weight for instance by taking pills or going on a diet. And once you’ve lost the weight, it’s often difficult to keep it off. After a while, you’re back to your original weight. One solution may be to have an operation to reduce the size of your stomach – but there’s a long waiting list for such operations and what’s more only patients who are extremely overweight are taken into consideration for them.

However with a gastric balloon, remarkable results can be achieved within a short space of time. On average men as well as women lose 20% of their weight with a gastric balloon.

Inserting the gastric balloon

The gastric balloon is inserted as an outpatient procedure, lasting approximately half an hour. It is not an operation, but is inserted via the mouth and oesophagus. You are given a mild sedative to numb and relax you. Once the balloon has been inserted, it is inflated with water. You can leave the clinic immediately after the procedure.

After inserting the gastric balloon

You may suffer from nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps for 2 to 3 days. The body takes about ten days to adjust and you have to take it easy during this time. You can then go back to whatever you used to do. The balloon “floats” in the stomach, giving you a feeling of satiety and fullness, while slowing down the rate at which food passes from the oesophagus to the stomach. For good results, sufficient physical exercise is essential, as well as carefully following the dietician’s advice. The gastric balloon is removed after a maximum of six months. In this period you will have been able to adjust your eating habits and lifestyle in such a way that your weight will remain stable.

  • Without an operation, you can lose around 20% of your weight;
  • The gastric balloon works in combination with diet and physical exercise;
  • You will be closely supported by a dietician.

Price of gastric balloon € 3.950 (payment by instalments is possible).
