Injectables: Botox, fillers and lipolysis

There are different types of injectables:

  • Fillers
  • Botox (muscle relaxant)
  • Lipolysis (reducing fat in specific areas)

Fillers

Lines and wrinkles may form as a result of the skin thinning and sagging. Fillers are used to fill in creases and wrinkles, accentuate contours and rejuvenate the face. For instance, filling the nose-to-lip crease, plumping up sagging corners of the mouth, augmenting lip volume, filling so-called smoker’s lines in the upper lip and accentuating lip contours or cheekbones. Laughter lines in the cheeks can also be treated by strengthening the skin of the cheeks.

There are various types of filler, offering different benefits. Your doctor will advise you about which filler will best suit your wishes.

Botox

Some lines and wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle movements, for example frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. Wrinkles such as these can be treated with Botox. Botox relaxes the muscle groups causing the wrinkles, in turn reducing the wrinkle.

Lesser known applications of Botox include eyebrow lifts and corner mouth lifts. Botox is also used to treat laughter lines on the nose and prevent showing gums when smiling.

Botox can also very effectively treat excessive perspiration of the armpits and hands. The treatments last for 6 to 12 months.

Botox + Fillers

The ideal treatment for certain wrinkles is often a combination of Botox and Fillers. Optimum results can be achieved by first relaxing the muscles causing the wrinkle and then strengthening the skin in the area of the wrinkle. Ask your doctor what the best treatment for you could be.

Lipolysis

To treat surplus fat in problem areas, apart from liposuction, it is also possible to use a fine needle to inject a liquid (phosphatidylcholine) which reduces the thickness of the fatty tissue. As opposed to liposuction, lipolysis is only to be applied in small areas.

The fatty tissue is not sucked away, but is cleared out by the body itself. This process lasts for a couple of weeks and may cause slight swelling and a burning feeling for the first few days. Three treatments are usually needed for the desired results.

Possible areas of application are under the chin, ”hamster cheeks” and lipomas (benign fatty tumours).

Lipolysis is in principle a permanent fat reduction method; fatty cells are no longer produced over the age of 20.

Procedures with injectables

The procedure can be carried out under local sedation. A few injections are made using a very fine needle. With a filler procedure, the treated area is then massaged to ensure the product is evenly distributed.

Post procedure

You may wear light make-up after an hour. There will sometimes be slight redness, swelling or bruising. This will generally go away quickly. Avoid exerting any pressure on the treated area for a couple of days.

After undergoing a Botox treatment, you should not rub the injected area for at least three hours. The effect of Botox will start to be visible after 1 to 2 weeks and will last for 3 to 6 months. The more often you have treatment in the same area, the longer the effect will remain visible.

The effect of fillers will last for 6 to 24 months depending on the product and area treated.

Check-ups will then be made in consultation with the doctor.
