Safe and permanent hair removal

Hair removal can be a difficult and painful experience. The Ellipse system is a rapid and effective method for removing unwanted hair without any pain. Safe, visible light is emitted from a flash-lamp to remove unwanted hair from all over the body.

How does permanent hair removal work?

Before the hair is removed, a thin layer of gel is applied to the skin to optimise the transmission of light to the hairs and protect the skin from the heat of the lamp. A flash-lamp is then used to emit short, safe bursts of light onto the skin. The pigment of the hairs absorbs the light and converts it into heat. The hairs conduct this heat to the follicles, which are then destroyed by the heat.

Duration of one treatment

The duration of the treatment depends on the scope of the area being treated. Facial treatments take approximately 20 minutes, while treatment for the back or both legs will last approximately an hour.

Precautions for permanent hair removal

It is important not to depilate or wax for 4 or more weeks prior to the procedure. However, the area requiring treatment is to be shaved before you are lasered, preferably 2 to 3 days before the laser treatment. You may not use a sunbed or sunbathe without using sun screen protection factor 50 for 4 weeks prior to the treatment, to prevent any pigmentation of the skin. It is not possible to undergo hair removal treatment if you are pregnant or taking antibiotics.

How painful is permanent hair removal?

Permanent hair removal can be felt to a certain extent, but is not painful. It does not entail more than a tingling or mild stinging sensation. The sensation stops immediately after the flash. The bikini line may be slightly more painful. In consultation, you may find a numbing cream is the solution for you.

Suitable for who?

Permanent hair removal must be performed safely and properly. When it comes to permanent hair removal, we adhere to the guidelines of ANBOS. You may come to us for hair removal if you are over 16 and have had your first period.

Suitable for which hair types?

The intensity of the light is adjusted to the individual skin and hair type. The hair removal treatment is most effective with darker hair and fair skin. Darker hairs absorb the light flash, and in turn the heat, more effectively.
Permanent hair removal is not possible on blonde, red or grey hair. This is because the hair follicle has to have pigment in order to be definitively removed.

Suitable for darker skin too?

The Boerhaave Medical Centre is one of the few clinics around with special equipment for darker skin types. Even the darkest of skin types can be treated with excellent results.

Number of treatments

Generally speaking, you will need 5 to 8 hair removal sessions, leaving a period of 6 to 8 weeks between each session. The permanent hair removal treatment cannot be done all in one session, as hair follicles go through resting and growing phases. Only follicles in the growth phase contain hair which can be destroyed in the Ellipse treatment. It is therefore necessary to repeat the treatment at intervals until all hair follicles have been through the growth phase.

The duration of the growth phases depends on a number of factors and can vary per person. Your age, skin type, the thickness and density of your hair and the hair growth region are all criteria to be taken into consideration. The treatment is therefore tailored specifically to meet your individual needs.

After permanent hair removal

If you have sensitive skin, you may benefit from using a soothing and cooling cream after the hair removal treatment. It is recommended to limit sun exposure after the hair removal treatments and to use sun screen (minimum SPF 20) for a few weeks following hair removal.
